Dr Heather Lally
Lecturer and Early Career Researcher in Freshwater Ecology & Biology specialising in freshwater ecosystems and their associated monitoring, management, and conservation. I have five years teaching and supervision experience, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. I currently teach (lectures, practicals and fieldtrips) in the areas of environmental science, aquatic botany, and freshwater biology and ecology. I have also given a number of specialist lectures and seminars. Throughout my lecturing, I incorporate a blended approach including group work, online discussion forms, problem-based learning, flipped classrooms, online quizzes, assignments, and peer- and self- assessment. To compliment my teaching, I have gained expertise in microplastic sampling techniques adapted to Irish rivers; trapping and estimating crayfish population abundances impacted by crayfish plague; in creating riparian buffer zones to increase the biodiversity and conservation value of freshwater riverine habitats; in detecting sediment impacts on macroinvertebrate assemblages near cattle access points along lowland riverine systems; in validating a sediment sensitive metrics for Irish lowland rivers; restoration and rehabilitation techniques on raised bogs and cutaway peatland habitats in Ireland; and wetland creation and biotic monitoring of wetlands.
